This was because each of those had 2 anchors what could be ever so slightly out of alignment. To make life a bit easier for me though I went with 5/8" holes in the middle and top posts. The anchors I used were 1/2" in diameter so I needed 1/2" holes. However, I need to leave enough wood and concrete around the anchors to get a good hold.so I measured 2" away from the end of each post and 2" away from where the top of the step would be on the post and drilled holes on the centerline. My plan was to put each anchor as far away from each other as possible to increase the stiffness of the post. ![]() It is time to mark the position of the holes for the cement anchors. The 4x4's for the middle and bottom post are cut to length and the top post is cut long (I'll explain why later)Įach post now has a 22.5 deg angle on the top and a flat bottom. (Distance from the step to the ground minus 1.5" and distance from the step to the handrail added together) and needs to be cut to size. Step 2: Processing the LumberĪt this point each post has markings for their length. With all the information gathered, It was time to mark the posts and prepare for. (The angle measurement was verified by cutting the measured angle on a piece of scrap wood and sliding it up against the post until it contacted the handrail.no gaps meant the cut was good) Measurements gave me that information at 22.5 deg and 36" respectively. The last things I needed to know were the angle of the other handrail and the height of the handrail above each step. Why 1.5 you might ask? Well simple: that is the thickness of a 2x4 and I had plenty of those I could use as spacers during the build. So how far did I have them come off the ground? Well I chose 1.5" I don't want them to touch the ground because that is a spot where moisture could get trapped and lead to premature rot in the posts. After some thought I decided to have them go nearly all the way to the ground. I also had to decide how far the posts were going to go down the side of the steps. like the previously installed handrail had been done. So I went with 3 posts spaced every other step. Let's see: fewer parts, simpler install, overall stronger build? Yup, I like my idea betterīecause there IS a handrail already installed, I wanted to match it so the new one didn't stand out. This wound reduce my mounting hardware to just a few cement anchors and would end up being much stiffer. So I decided to mount into the side face of the stairs. Despite all the bracing on the other handrail, the whole thing still shifts when you lean on it.I wanted mine to be solid. You can see from the pictures that one side of the stairs already has handrails installed, there the builder opted to mount the posts to the top of the steps with some specialized mounting brackets and braces. I decided that I could either mount the posts into the top of the steps or on the side face of the stairs. Putting the posts into the dirt wasn't going to be an option. Suppliesīefore I jumped into making anything, I had to get measurements and plan how the build was going to go.Ĭoming down from the back porch, I have 6 concrete steps, surrounded by a concrete pad. ![]() In the following steps I will be sure to fill in the gaps on all the steps so that when your backyard stairs (or any other exterior stairs for that matter) need some attention, you'll know just what to do. I'll share the things and what I learned so that hopefully when such a project comes up for you it can be just as painless (knock on wood).Īdditionally, I've included a link to a video showing the process. I came in under budget (spending less than $100) and only had to put in half a day's work. Well I'm happy to say that THIS project was one of those wonderful ones that just comes together. many DIY projects start out with a similar confidence but quickly turn into a series of setbacks and issues as you fumble your way to completing the project. While the project had the novelty (at least for me) of requiring cement anchors.overall the project seemed pretty straight-forward so I decide to take it on.Īfterall.why am I gonna pay a contractor to do something that i have all the tools and know-how to figure out on my own? The surface area of a triangular prism is the area that is occupied by its surface. A brief explanation of both is given below along with the formula. There are two important formulae of a triangular prism which are surface area and volume. A right triangular prism has 6 vertices, 9 edges, and 5 faces. In other words, the angle formed at the intersection of triangle and rectangle faces should be 90 degrees, therefore, the triangular faces are perpendicular to the lateral rectangular faces.
![]() This eel-like fish feeds on invertebrates with hard shells ( crustaceans, sea urchins, mussels, clams) and some fishes, crushing them with its strong jaws. The male and female may pair for life and inhabit a cave together the two watch their eggs together and one always stays behind when the other leaves to feed. Large wolf eels are curious and are rarely aggressive, but are capable of inflicting painful bites on humans. Behavior A small juvenile wolf eel A pair of wolf eel with eggs (pale yellowish) ocellatus is found in caves, crevices and rocky reefs from shallow waters to a depth of 226 m (741 ft), ranging from the Sea of Japan and the Bering Sea to Northern California. Ecology Distribution Wolf eel in its habitatĪ. The eggs hatch after 91 to 112 days, and during this period, in order to ensure their oxygenation, the female circulates water around the eggs and periodically massages and rotates the eggs as they develop. ![]() Together they protect the eggs, and only one leaves the cave at a time, to feed. She coils around the eggs, using her body to shape the eggs into a neat sphere, roughly the size of a grapefruit. The male places his head against the female's abdomen and wraps around her, while she extrudes the eggs, up to 10,000 at a time, which he then fertilizes. They reproduce from October until the end of winter, beginning when they are around seven years old. Wolf eels have a monogamous relationship and tend to mate for life and live in the same cave. The lifespan of this species is about 20 years. Males have large lips and a protuberance on the superior part of the head. It has no pelvic fins, nor a lateral line. It only has one dorsal fin, that extends from the head to the end of the body, with 228 to 250 flexible fishbones without soft radius. In the anal fin, it has no rays and 233 radials. They possess powerful jaws with which they crush their prey: canine teeth in the front and molars in the posterior portion of the mouth. Once older they turn grey, brown greyish or dark olive. ![]() Younger wolf eels are orange with big dark spots in the posterior part of the body. ![]() The animal can grow up to 2.4 m (7 ft 10 in) in length and 18.4 kg (41 lb) in weight. ocellatus differs from true eels, as they have paired gill slits and pectoral fins. Wolf eel at the Dallas Children's Aquarium Description Ī. The specific name ocellatus means “ocellated”, a reference to the eye like spots, or ocelli, on the dorsal fin and body. The wolf eel’s genus name Anarrhichthys combines the wolffish genus Anarhichas, as this taxon has a similar head shape to the wolffishes, and ichthys, which means “fish”. This is one of two genera in the family Anarhichadidae, the other being Anarhichas. It is the only species in the monotypic genus Anarrichthys, which was also described by Ayres in 1855. The wolf eel was first formally described in 1855 by the American physician and ichthyologist William Orville Ayres with the type locality given as San Francisco Bay in California. It is the only species in the monotypic genus Anarrhichthys. Despite its common name and resemblance, it is not a true eel. The wolf eel ( Anarrhichthys ocellatus) is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Anarhichadidae, the wolf fishes. |
